APG 142 – Diagnosis: Aviation Geek Virus

APG 142 – Diagnosis: Aviation Geek Virus

Back on a 4-day trip again. First night in Springfield, MA (flew into KBDL), and the next two in Miami. We had another impromptu APG Meet-up on my first layover in Miami, this time checking out Elwood’s Gastro Pub. Rick, Nick, Chad and Jessica joined me for a fun night of beer, food, and great conversation!

In the news this week, we talk about the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo crash, the King Air 200 crash in Wichita, mystery drones flying over nuclear sites in France, a 757 dropping its over-wing slide package in flight, and more. A lot of great feedback as well, including the dude who thought it’d be a good idea to taxi a wingless Beech Skipper to the local bar, and the dreaded bug that has bitten most of us: Aviation Geek Virus.

APG 141 – Play APG Bingo!

Three people lost their lives in a tragic mid-air collision between a helicopter and a Cirrus SR22 last week at the Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, Maryland (KFDK). We listen to the ATC communications with the pilots, and talk about the importance of following instructions and using “See and Avoid” procedures.

American Airlines flight returns to gate : flight from LAX to LHR returned to the gate last week when a mysterious wifi network name appeared on a passenger’s computer while taxiing out for takeoff. The “Al Quida Free Terror Nettwork” upset the passenger, who notified a flight attendant, who in turn notified the captain. The flight departed the next day at 1:00 PM, after a delay of 17 hours.

The MD-11 has flown its last regularly scheduled revenue flight (passenger service). KLM Flight 672 took off from Montreal and flew to Amsterdam.

APG 140 – Meet-ups, Flight Control Problems, Emergencies

Would you hesitate to declare an emergency? We discuss an article about pilot reluctance to declare an emergency when it is the appropriate thing to do.

A sick passenger on a flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Chicago was told by flight attendants worried about Ebola that she would have to stay in the lavatory for the duration of the flight, according to a passenger witness. Is this a case of hysteria and overreaction, or prudent action?

Here’s an interesting one: A Skywest CRJ2 experienced flight control problems while on approach to Chicago’s O’Haire International last week. They safely landed the jet at DuPage Airport southwest of KORD.

APG 139 – Ebola and the Airlines: Are Crews Safe?

APG 139 – Ebola and the Airlines: Are Crews Safe?

Is the Ebola virus outbreak under control? How will the airlines deal with this? A second healthcare worker has been diagnosed with the deadly virus, and she travelled on a Frontier flight over the weekend. Passengers and crew are being monitored.

The largest American flight attendants union says it wants airline passengers to return to stowing phones and other electronics during takeoffs and landings, but the group’s arguments didn’t seem to fly Friday in court. I’m afraid this is too late. Water under the bridge. Until we have an airplane crash directly connected to electronic device use, this won’t happen.

The reincarnation of PEOPLExpress announced that their cessation of service will continue indefinitely, at least until they can get FAA approval to continue operations as a Part 380 carrier.

APG 138 – Ebola, High Speed Aborts, Rejected Takeoffs, Snippy Pilots, and Stuck Mics

APG 138 – Ebola, High Speed Aborts, Rejected Takeoffs, Snippy Pilots, and Stuck Mics

The latest developments in the worldwide Ebola virus outbreak, and how it is and will impact air travel. Will stepped up screening efforts have any significant impact in combatting the spread of this deadly virus? Many people are skeptical.

The Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport opened their new runway, 10R/28L on September 18th. The 8,000 foot runway will help to increase capacity at the airport, while decreasing delays.

Aeromexico Flight 18 was rolling for takeoff on LAX’s Runway 25R last weekend, when the number 1 left main gear tire failed. The pilots initiated a high speed abort. After it was determined that no fire was present, the captain elected to keep the passengers onboard, and later deplaned onto the runway via air stairs.

Other news events discussed: FAA issues order to replace Honeywell cockpit displays on certain B-737 and B-777 aircraft. Two Ryanair jets collide while taxiing in Dublin. Another snippy Delta pilot on the radio, and a stuck mic episode, this time WestJet.

APG 137 – Chicago Center Fire, Beagles, and Logo Lights

An FAA contractor sets fire to the Chicago ARTCC, then attempts to take his own life. What a mess.

Have you seen the cute beagle in the KLM commercial who reunites owners with their lost items? Sadly, the whole thing is made up. Oh well.
