APG 106 – Fire on a Plane, How to Survive a Plane Crash

APG 106 – Fire on a Plane, How to Survive a Plane Crash

The most interesting story of this past week has to be the Etihad flight from Melbourne, VI to Abu Dhabi, UAE, which diverted to Jakarta, Indonesia after two separate fires in two separate lavatories were started. After four hours of investigation by Indonesian police, all passengers were allowed to re-board the flight. Somewhere over the Indian Ocean, another THREE fires were set. There are now reports that a female has been detained for further questioning.

Turns out that the co-pilot who threatened to crash the Ethiopia Airlines plane before flying it to Geneva was “in mourning for his dead uncle.” Yeah. I always feel like hijacking airliners and seeking asylum when somebody dies in my family [sarcasm].

Listener Vernon from Colorado sent me a link to a great HuffPo article, How to Survive a Plane Crash. Great stuff.

APG 105 – Ethiopian Airlines Flight Hijacked, United Flight Severe Turbulence

ethiopian600

Don’t leave hijacking an airliner to the amateurs, not when you can do it yourself. That’s apparently the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 702 co-pilot’s philosophy. Hailemedhin Abera Tegegn felt threatened by the Ethiopian government… enough so that he thought it a good idea to lock the captain out of the cockpit, fly the jet to Geneva instead of Rome, and seek political asylum from the Swiss government. Problem is, it will be hard to overlook the fact that he essentially kidnapped the 202 passengers and the flight’s crew, which is a crime that may leave him in the slammer for 20 years. Oops.

Here’s the ATC audio, courtesy of LiveATC.net.

A Nepal Airlines Twin Otter crashed last week, killing all 18 on board. The investigation continues, but several listeners on frequency reported that the aircraft attempted to divert to Bhairahawa Airport due to icing after the aircraft had flown into freezing rain.

Severe Turbulence – A United Airlines 737 flight from Denver to Billings experienced a severe upset, injuring three cabin crew members and two passengers. While it isn’t yet clear what caused the episode, I suspect it may have been caused by Mountain Wave turbulence, which is common this time of year in the Western US mountain states. Do you still need a reason to always stay seated with your seat belts fastened?

Well, this one’s a crazy one. I got all caught up in the winter storm which swept through the Southeastern US up to New England, and tried to record a show in the midst of it.

A 45-year-old Ukrainian man attempted to highjack a Pegasus Airlines flight, but ended up in the original destination city… although he wasn’t counting on jailhouse accommodations. 2,000 very unhappy travelers in China started a riot at a Henan Province airport. Seems customer service was a little lacking. The FBI announced a new crackdown on pointing lasers at aircraft, including a provision to reward those who come forward with information about individuals who engage in this dangerous activity. The FAA released the final rule Prohibition on Personal Use of Electronic Devices on the Flight Deck, effective in 60 days.

APG 103 – Pilot Shortage Arrives Sooner and It's Worse than Expected

jet600

Recorded in Canton, OH on February 5, 2014.

The FAA has downgraded India’s Airline Safety Rating, and the Hindustan Times is not very happy about it.

A girl thrown from a plane that crashed at San Francisco International Airport died before she was twice run over by fire trucks, according to a city-issued report that contradicted a coroner’s finding that the teen survived the crash and was killed by the vehicles.

An ex-TSA “agent” who has been writing an anonymous blog has finally come out of the screening closet, and tells us all about the behind the scenes drama in an article on Politico Magazine. The only thing of interest is the “Insider’s TSA Dictionary.” Everything else is stuff we’ve already heard. Just move along through the ineffective screening machine… nothing to see here.

Now, this is brilliant. A Chinese man wines and dines at the China Eastern Airlines First Class Lounge for a year, for free. Listen in to the show to hear how he got away with it.

Justin Bieber continues to embarrass his Canadian homeland. Now, on a chartered private jet, the smoke from his marijuana use causes the pilots to don oxygen masks for much of the flight. Very classy.

It seems that the pilot shortage has arrived earlier and is having a bigger effect than most people imagined. That’s good news for all of you prospective professional airline pilots.

Recorded in Springfield, MA on January 28, 2014.

Update on the Canadian fellow who crashed a C-172R at the Nashville International Airport: Apparently he was legally drunk. And he claimed that Taylor Swift was his next of kin. Odd.

Recently, video was released of the crash of a Canadair CL-600 at Aspen.

A B-767-300 on approach to Buenos Aires Ezeiza, BA (Argentina) encounters turbulence so strong that a slat on the right wing rips off.

I played some audio from LiveATC.net of an American 737 getting stuck in the snow at BWI, and a Bonanza with a towbar attached to the nose gear at KADS.

Interesting video of a Canadian goose smashing through the windscreen of a C-210.

APG 101 – Baby It's Cold Outside

APG 101 – Baby It's Cold Outside

Cold enough for ya? Recorded in Baltimore, MD, Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Well, it is cold here! In this episode, I talk about the inexplicable actions of the Edmonton International security screeners, who allowed a young man to continue his travels after confiscating a pipe bomb from him. Must have looked pretty harmless… with the NINE FOOT LONG fuse hanging from it. Oh, and they tried to GIVE IT BACK TO HIM. Amazing.

The 787 Dreamliner is still experiencing some “growing pains,” I guess. An Air India 788 loses all transponders near Belin, and fuel leaking from the right wing in Bangkok.

A DC-9 leaves the runway in Saltillo, Mexico.

One of two giant eagle sculptures hanging from the ceiling of the Wellington, New Zealand airport came crashing down last week after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake last week. No one was injured.

And finally, we talk about the article written by Rich Smith at The Motley Fool entitled “TSA at the Airport: Inconvenient, or Just Plain Incompetent?
