APG 102 – Interview Advice

interviewadvice

Recorded in Springfield, MA on January 28, 2014.

Update on the Canadian fellow who crashed a C-172R at the Nashville International Airport: Apparently he was legally drunk. And he claimed that Taylor Swift was his next of kin. Odd.

Recently, video was released of the crash of a Canadair CL-600 at Aspen.

A B-767-300 on approach to Buenos Aires Ezeiza, BA (Argentina) encounters turbulence so strong that a slat on the right wing rips off.

I played some audio from LiveATC.net of an American 737 getting stuck in the snow at BWI, and a Bonanza with a towbar attached to the nose gear at KADS.

Interesting video of a Canadian goose smashing through the windscreen of a C-210.

APG 101 – Baby It's Cold Outside

Cold enough for ya? Recorded in Baltimore, MD, Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Well, it is cold here! In this episode, I talk about the inexplicable actions of the Edmonton International security screeners, who allowed a young man to continue his travels after confiscating a pipe bomb from him. Must have looked pretty harmless… with the NINE FOOT LONG fuse hanging from it. Oh, and they tried to GIVE IT BACK TO HIM. Amazing.

The 787 Dreamliner is still experiencing some “growing pains,” I guess. An Air India 788 loses all transponders near Belin, and fuel leaking from the right wing in Bangkok.

A DC-9 leaves the runway in Saltillo, Mexico.

One of two giant eagle sculptures hanging from the ceiling of the Wellington, New Zealand airport came crashing down last week after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake last week. No one was injured.

And finally, we talk about the article written by Rich Smith at The Motley Fool entitled “TSA at the Airport: Inconvenient, or Just Plain Incompetent?

What better location to record my 100th episode than the “Birthplace of Aviation,” Dayton, Ohio? As they say, “sit back, relax, and enjoy” the next 2+ hours of me rambling on and on about many different things. Like the Southwest pilots who landed at the wrong airport. They were close. But, not close enough. As I’ve said many times, it’s not the first time this has happened, and it won’t be the last. Guaranteed. So, how can it be possible in this day of sophisticated navigation displays that we still have pilots landing at the wrong airport? Ah. The Human Factor. And as much as many out there would love to eliminate the human in the equation, the fact remains that humans, more often than not, actually “save the day” in the world of man and machine.

Oh. Not again. A Japan Air 787 Dreamliner experiences another battery-related issue. The good news? The system or “solution” actually worked as intended by isolating the single cell thermal runaway. The bad news? We still have cells going into thermal runaway.

Again, I received a lot of great questions from you, my listeners. Is a college degree really necessary for a commercial airline pilot? Which is better, Multi-crew Pilot license program or PPL CPL IR ATPL program? What are the vision requirements to be a pilot in the Air Force? Why did you leave the Georgia Institute of Technology after just one year? Lots more great questions and feedback.

Here’s that picture that Frik sent me of the low-flying South African Air Force Harvard:

APG 099 – Hero

APG 099 – Hero

I started this in Flint, MI, and ended it in Memphis, TN. Lots of crazy weather out there the past several days. From freezing rain and long deicing delays in Philadelphia, to severe thunderstorms and turbulence in Atlanta.

I chose to name this episode “hero” in honor of a World War II fighter pilot named Bill Overstreet, who just recently passed away. You should check out this NPR interview. Bill was the pilot who pursued a German fighter through the base of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He was 92.

Always a challenging approach into Aspen, CO, but strong tailwinds made it even more so last week, when a Challenger 601 business jet crashed while trying to land. One of the three occupants died.

A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 767-300 had trouble lowering the right main gear on approach to Madinah last week, resulting in a partial gear landing.

Sadly, the LAM E190 that crashed in Africa in late November was confirmed to be a suicide/homicide by Namibia’s Investigator in Charge. 28 passengers and 6 crew perished.

Lots of feedback in this episode, including contaminated air, packages, my favorite hotels and hotel chains (which I actually forgot to answer!), the Federal Interstate System, and much more.

APG 098 – 100th Anniversary of Scheduled Commercial Airline Service

APG 098 – 100th Anniversary of Scheduled Commercial Airline Service

Benoist_xiv

I’m back from my holiday vacation, and ready to talk commercial aviation! This show recorded on layover in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Thursday, January 2, 2014.

First, let’s talk about what’s happened since we last met. I had a great holiday vacation with my family (we didn’t go anywhere, but we didn’t have to, because we love hanging out together!). I picked up a two-day on December 29-30, and I talk about the medical emergency that occurred on day 2.

Investigators in Africa believe that the captain of a Mozambique Airlines flight that crashed killing all 33 people onboard brought it down deliberately. Very sad.

A British Airways B-747 in Johannesburg didn’t make a slight turn while taxiing out for takeoff, and continued on a General Aviation taxiway. Quite an exciting time for the occupants of a building near the taxiway when much of the right wing just outboard of the number four engine sliced it open! No one aboard the aircraft was injured, but four building occupants received minor injuries. Investigation continues.

100th Anniversary of Scheduled Commercial Airline Service – Yesterday (January 1st) marked the 100th anniversary of commercial airline flight! Yay!

A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A330-300, performing flight VS-98 from Tobago (Trinidad and Tobago) to Saint Lucia (Saint Lucia), was on final approach to Saint Lucia at about 19:40L (23:40Z) and had just received landing clearance when river “Petite Riviere Du Vieux Fort” burst its banks and flooded the airport reportedly washing the weather station away and setting the runway under mud and water. The aircraft touched down on the flooded runway without warning and managed to come to a stop. No injuries occurred, the aircraft however received substantial damage to landing gear and underside of the fuselage. Check out this link to see pictures of the damage.

An Ethiopian B763 at Arusha on Dec 18th 2013, landed on a short runway at the wrong airport and had a runway excursion while trying to turn around. Check out this video to see the 767 takeoff from the short runway a couple of days later.

APG 097 – Assumptions

APG 097 – Assumptions

777cockpit

The Asiana 214 Investigative Hearing took place last week, and I chime in with my “take-away.” Absent at the hearing was the pilot crew, although the NTSB did publish a summary of their interviews. Interesting read.

Concerned about several recent incidents involving sleeping or fatigued pilots and air traffic controllers, the FAA’s federal air surgeon, Dr. Fred Tilton ordered a new Sleep Apnea policy be enacted immediately. Is your BMI greater than 40? If so, the new rule would require you to undergo (and pay for) a full-blown sleep study to determine whether you suffer from Sleep Apnea. ALPA, AOPA, National Air Traffic Controllers Association, and other interested parties expressed their concern that this rule was being ramrodded into effect without proper hearings and rule-making protocols.

Southwest Airlines announced that it is introducing a new weather detection system that could potentially improve weather forecasting. The airline finished installing Water Vapor Sensing Systems (WVSS-II) on 87 of its Boeing 737s, which will by provide real-time humidity data for planes in flight and during takeoff and landing.

A 737-800 slid off the end of a slippery runway in Madison, WI last week. I play the ATC recording, and speculate on various scenarios that may have caused the excursion. Other news items include an update on the Thai Airways A330 runway excursion, a terrorist threat that was “nipped in the bud” at Wichita Mid-Continent airport, and a Pakistan International Airlines pilot who decided waiting on a sandwich delivery was worth delaying the international flight for two and a half hours. Must have been a good sandwich.
