APG 113 – Twitter Twoubles, Malaysia 370 Update

USAirTweet

A little “harmless prank” lands Dutch girl in jail. I think we should all know by now that you just don’t make threats to airline operations, unless you’re serious. Will this incident be a learning moment for everyone? Nope. I seriously doubt that.

You ever push the wrong button when sending an email or text message? Well, a US Airways “Customer Representative” wishes they had paid closer attention to the link being sent to a disgruntled customer. Yeah. It didn’t make things any better.

Interesting new bit of information released last week regarding the Malaysia 370 mystery flight. It seems that someone attempted to use the co-pilot’s cell phone sometime after the flight disappeared from radar. Also, another flight crew actually made radio contact with the flight after the radar disappearance.

APG 112 – Cows, Crosswinds, Flaps and Phablets

cowswide600

And we thought that the Global Warming threat from cow emissions (methane gas) was bad… turns out a Boeing 747 was forced to make an emergency landing because of overheating cows! Really.

Speaking of overheating, the debate about the usefulness and desirability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles was ratcheted up a notch when the FAA recently grounded a nonprofit Texas volunteer search-and-rescue outfit that uses 5 pound (2.27 kilogram) styrofoam drones. The group is fighting back and maintains that “there is no legal basis” for the FAA’s position.

A Maddog was flying from ATL to LGA last week when it experienced a complete loss of hydraulics, causing a divert to JFK to have access to a longer runway. I was able to capture the ATC/flight communications (thanks to the awesome LiveATC.net folks!) so that we could discuss the emergency event.

APG 111 – NTSB Safety Alert, World Airways Shuts Down, Malaysia 370

APG 111 – NTSB Safety Alert, World Airways Shuts Down, Malaysia 370

photo 3

The NTSB issued a Safety Alert last week reminding pilots to use vigilance when operating into the destination airport at night and when landing at an airport with others in close proximity. The Safety Alert outlines five measures pilots can take to avoid a wrong airport landing, and provides additional flight safety resources.

Founded in 1948, World Airways recently announced the immediate cessation of all operations. World’s parent company, Global Aviation Holdings, sited the inability to secure further funding from Cerberus, World’s first lien lender.

As this episode is being recorded, more than three weeks has elapsed since the disappearance of Malaysia Flight 370. So far, not one shred of physical evidence of its supposed “crash” has materialized. That hasn’t stopped the cable news channels from continuing their parade of “aviation experts,” spending a majority of their broadcast hours talking endlessly about the disappearance. What did happen to the flight? In a nutshell, nobody knows.

I went on a little bit of a rant in this episode. It’s not the first time I’ve been irritated by WSJ columnist Holman Jenkins, who somewhat fashions himself an “aviation expert,” apparently (well, why not? Everybody else in the world is). In his “piece” Someday, All Planes Will Be Drones, Jenkins drones on and on about how the skies would be safer with passenger flights being piloted, well, not piloted by humans. In fact, in his last paragraph, he states with utmost ignorance, “Passenger planes, once passengers realize the crew is mostly there to cause mistakes, will be fully automated even if a trained crew member is standing by to lend comfort.” Mr. Jenkins, you are a fool.

APG 110 – Malaysia 370 Update, Laser Crackdown, Go-Arounds

APG 110 – Malaysia 370 Update, Laser Crackdown, Go-Arounds

keep-calm

Malaysia 370 Update – Just when you thought the Malaysian government’s Flight 370 investigation couldn’t get worse, a recent announcement that “there is no unreasonable doubt that the airline went down in the ocean west of Perth” was met with resistance and criticism. At the time of this episode’s recording, there is still no physical evidence of the supposed crash.

A California man was sentenced to 14 years in a federal prison for pointing a laser at a Fresno police helicopter. I hope this will help send the message to others that intentionally aiming a laser at aircraft is not a prank, but a federal crime with very serious consequences.

Canadian research firm Presage recently released a report examining go-arounds. “No other single decision can have such an impact on the industry accident rate.”

APG 109 – Malaysia 370, US Airways A320 Nose Gear Collapse, Delta B757 Loses Wing Panel

US1702
The Malaysia Airlines B777 is still missing. We may never know what happened. The only winners here are the big cable news outlets, which are reaping huge viewing numbers by continuing to sensationalize the investigation. Apparently, a steady string of “aviation experts” is helping to hold our interest… even if the credentials of some of these so-called “experts” is highly questionable.

What happened to US Airways 1702? Multiple eyewitness accounts say the airplane became airborne before attempting to return to the runway, and after a large bounce, came down hard on the nose landing gear, collapsing it. Was it windshear? Tailstrike?

A Delta B757 lost a large fiberglass panel from the top of the right wing as it started its initial descent into ATL. The flight landed safely in ATL.

APG 108 – Missing

APG 108 – Missing

In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was streaking across the Gulf of Thailand at FL350 when it completely disappeared from the radar. As I record this episode, it is nearly four days after the disappearance of the Boeing 777. What happened?

6 Mysterious Airplane Disappearances in Aviation History

Great news for us Auburn Aviation Management alums. Last May, school officials announced their intent to outsource Auburn’s flight training program and ultimately “sunset” the aviation management degree program. It seems that they’ve had a change of heart! After a huge show of support from the aviation community, Auburn University officials have reversed there decision, and instead will keep and even bolster the aviation program! The Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) re-accredited the school’s resurgent aviation management curriculum last month.
