APG 125 – Near Misses, Drones, and Cockpit Relocation

More near misses in the news; drones, too. An Air New Zealand Captain locks his co-pilot out of the cockpit, a man sues BA for sending him to Grenada, and Airbus is awarded a patent to put pilots in the cargo hold.

APG 124 – Amelia Earhart Circumnavigation, Harrier Lands without Nose Gear

This summer, Amelia Rose Earhart will recreate and symbolically complete her namesake’s famous around-the-world-flight. In 17 stops and approximately 24,300 nautical miles, Amelia will fly a Pilatus PC-12 NG around the globe, completing the flight that her namesake never got to finish. Follow her progress here: Amelia Earhart Project

A USMC pilot uses his superior airmanship to successfully land a stricken Harrier jet. Marine Corps Harrier Jet Nose Gear Malfunction

A United flight had to divert shortly into its journey because of an uncommanded escape slide inflation during the flight. No one was injured.

Rollin W. King, a co-founder of Southwest Airlines, the low-cost carrier that helped to change the way Americans travel, died Thursday in Dallas. He was 83. The cause was complications from a stroke he had a year ago. We discuss the history of the low-cost Texas startup.

APG 123 – Good First Officer Traits, Heading vs Course, IAS vs Mach

APG 123 – Good First Officer Traits, Heading vs Course, IAS vs Mach

So, complaining about the lack of legroom on your recent flight, huh? Well, at least your flight wasn’t fired upon by gunmen as happened to the Pakistani International Airlines flight landing in the Northern Pakistan city of Peshawar last week.

It really was no surprise that the NTSB blamed pilot error in last July’s crash of Asiana Flight 214 attempting to land at SFO. In addition to mismanagement and misunderstanding of the automation aboard the jet, the board seemed to imply that the design, operation and training of the Boeing’s autoflight and autothrottle system was somehow contributory as well. Boeing has taken strong objection.

In the feedback segment, we discuss many things, including traits of a good first officer (co-pilot), courses versus headings, IAS versus mach speed, visual approaches, and much more. Below are links to many of the items discussed.

APG 122 – Go-Around Joke, Unfit to Fly, Service Ceiling

Dr. Steph Jumps Out of Perfectly Good Airplane!

Dr. Steph Jumps Out of Perfectly Good Airplane!

There is a time and place for humor in ATC-pilot communications, but it’s best to make it clear that you are joking. That’s what an ATL Tower controller learned last week, when his response to Delta 630’s comment about gate availability resulted in a go-around command. The controller immediately transmitted “just kidding,” but DL630 was transmitting at the same time, and didn’t hear that essential bit of info.

Dr. Richard Gilder Rockefeller, grandson of John D. Rockefeller, died last week when his Piper Meridian crashed in Westchester, NY. Foggy weather existed at the time.

Thomas Frank’s piece in USA Today last week, Unfit For Flight, has really rankled a bunch of folks in the General Aviation community. Of course, it’s not the first time a “journalist” has used statistics to support his narrative.

A pilot working for a skydiving company ended up jumping for the first time, when another skydiver damaged the tail of his plane, making it impossible to land.

APG 121 – Drone haters, Bomber Pilot Heroes, Planes that go Bump in the Night

So, you don’t like drones, huh? Well, apparently neither does a young lady at the beach who attacked a UAV pilot.

USAF Captain Mark Gongol stepped in to help out the United Airlines first officer during a pilot incapacitation event last year. Big Media had a heyday with this one, basically inferring that that airplane would have crashed had it not been for his heroism. Let’s sort it all out, shall we?

A Bonanza pilot had some fuel problems (lack of?) recently in Monroe, LA, and crashed short of the airport. LiveATC audio with this one.
