APG 130 – Fracking PIT

APG 130 – Fracking PIT

Pittsburgh International Airport will stay open as drillers tap the gas reserves underneath, thanks to a technique called hydraulic fracturing, or commonly known as “fracking.” Dayton International, not too far away, is experimenting with planting tall prairie grass in an effort to reduce bird strikes. More news, including a pilot losing partial control of his Flybe DH8D because of a prosthetic arm malfunction, and a Jet Airways B-777 co-pilot apparently unable to return the jet to their assigned altitude after descending some 5,000 feet. Seems like that would be something a pilot should know how to do? APG 129 – Wifi Security Threat, EAA AirVenture, Light Beacons

APG 129 – Wifi Security Threat, EAA AirVenture, Light Beacons

Must be that time of year again… the Blackhat Security Show in Vegas. Another “expert” security consultant making the claim that he can hack into the wifi systems aboard airliners, causing all kind of mayhem. Problem is that the wifi systems share absolutely nothing with the navigation and control systems of our modern aircraft. Yawn.

The EAA’s AirVenture show ended last week in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Fortunately, one of the APG community members, Chad the Financial Planner Guy, was on location and sent us an audio report! Also, we talk about the One Week Wonder, an airplane built during the seven days of the show. YouTube video here.

“Watch this!” Something you really never want to hear a pilot say. A Cirrus salesman in Australia flubs a potential sale when demonstrating the excellent stall and spin recovery characteristics of the craft. Unfortunately, he had to demonstrate the CAPS (Cirrus Airframe Parachute System) instead, landing in one very unhappy woman’s garden. Oops.

More news, including the new Airpooler service, the San Jose Police Department’s misunderstanding of UAV use, and inflight internet service for GA.

APG 128.5 – Feedback Extra

APG 128 – Tragedy at sea, Farnborough report, Airport WiFi Connectivity

As we have been celebrating several successful world circumnavigation events these last few weeks, a recent tragedy reminds us that these attempts aren’t completely without risk. 17-year-old Haris Suleman and his father Babar set out from Pago Pago, American Samoa last week in their single engine Beechcraft Bonanza, headed for the Hawaiian Islands. Just minutes after takeoff, an air traffic controller witnessed the lights of the plane heading downward to the sea, approximately 23 miles off the island’s coast. Haris’s body was recovered; his father is still missing.

Shifting to better news, it looks like airline employment continues on an upward vector. Alaska, Delta, JetBlue, and Spirit were among airlines cited for hiring increases.

Our friends Carlos and Simon of the Plane Talking UK Podcast sent us a recording from their recent visit to the Farnborough International Airshow. Sounds like they had a great time.

Wondering which US airports have the best wifi connectivity? Check out the WeFi Report results reported by MarketWired. The report also cites the hotel chains and beaches (?) with best connectivity.

APG 127 – Rockets, Missiles and Planes

APG 127 – Rockets, Missiles and Planes

Just before hitting “record” for this episode, breaking news reports the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip region, including the rocket strike landing near Tel Aviv International airport, which caused the divert of a Delta flight from New York to Tel Aviv. The flight landed safely in Paris. Several US airlines canceled flights into TLV, prompting the FAA to issue a NOTAM, temporarily prohibiting all US flights into The airport.

Finger-pointing continues in the tragic shoot down of Malaysia MH17 over Eastern Croatia. My good friend and fellow Acme employee Dispatcher Mike and I have a conversation about what has transpired so far, and what we can all learn from it.

APG 126 – Farnborough 2014, United Diverts to Midway, TSA

APG 126 – Farnborough 2014, United Diverts to Midway, TSA

Tragedy strikes Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. News of the apparent shoot-down by an anti-aircraft missile over Ukraine is breaking right before I push the record button for Episode 126.

A United B-777 diverts to Midway Atoll after experiencing electrical odors, smoke and haze, and electronic instrument failures enroute from Honolulu, HI to Guam.

The TSA introduces new precautionary measures for flights to the United States from some international airports. Make sure your electronic device batteries are fully charged! Also, according to the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), illegal aliens can travel on US air carriers without any valid ID. What? And a TSA agent held up an Orlando television reporter at the Orlando International Airport for not having valid ID. Apparently, this agent didn’t realize that drivers licenses of the District of Columbia (Washington, DC) are valid US identification documents, and passports are not necessary.

On the brighter side, Just A Catholic Dad Sean McCarney joins me to discuss the Farnborough International Air Show, which is going on this week.
