We’re still trying to figure out why the flight attendants manually deployed the cabin oxygen masks during the engine overheat/failure episode at Long Beach last week. APG listener Tyler sends audio feedback relating to deploying the masks.
A NYPD Helicopter had to take evasive action last week to avoid hitting a drone at 800 feet AGL, five miles south of LGA in New York. Operator arrested. PIBOT, a mini-robot, supposedly “flies” a PC simulator. Finally, a man is removed from a Tyger Airways flight for “terrorist” doodles.

It’s been a busy week at the APG Newsroom! We started the week with yet another crash that may be linked to hypoxia, and I decided to spend a little time discussing it, as well as emphasizing the importance of recognizing impairment and acting quickly.
On Tuesday, the NTSB met to issue their findings on the crash of UPS 1354 in Birmingham, AL a year ago August. Bottom line: Human error. I hosted a Google Hangout On Air Tuesday morning to watch the board meeting, and several APG community members were able to participate!
We discuss other news as well, including the crash of a Cessna 421C medical flight in New Mexico August 27. Seems the plane was refueled with Jet A instead of 100LL Avgas.

The Obama administration has lifted longtime restrictions on U.S. flight and nuclear science training for Libyans – despite potential dangers that the country could still be breeding anti-American terrorists. Really?
Some interesting details about the accident that occurred on July 27 in Venice, Florida, in which a man and his daughter were killed by a Piper Cherokee have been revealed in an initial report. The NTSB found the fuel selector off, magnetos off, mixture rich, throttle forward and carburetor heat off. The investigators were able to get the engine restarted and, after straightening the bent propeller blade, ran the engine up to 2,000 rpm. The fuel lines and vents also appeared to be clear.
The FAA issued a ruling that prohibits private pilots from publicly offering seats on their planes in exchange for gas money, including via startups like AirPooler and Flytenow. I bet they wish now that they hadn’t asked for clarification!
