APG 148 – Good Aviators vs Great Aviators

APG 148 – Good Aviators vs Great Aviators

What sets a good aviator apart from a great aviator? One of many good questions asked of Bob Hoover by David Hartman at the Wright Memorial Dinner in Washington, DC last week.

111 years ago this week, two brothers succeeded in making history: Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903.

An Air India A320 nearly misses hitting a UAV, active side stick controllers, and single-pilot cockpit ops are discussed as well.

APG 147 – Awww Nuts!

APG 147 – Awww Nuts!

An Embraer EMB-500 Phenom 100 VLJ (Very Light Jet) crashed at Gaithersburg-Montgomery County Airport, MD (GAI), approximately 20 miles north of the nation’s capital, killing all three on board and three members of a family on the ground. The NTSB is investigating the accident, which looks suspiciously like a classic low speed stall.

A Korean Air flight had to return to the gate at JFK due to a kerfuffle over macadamia nuts. It seems that the daughter of Korean Air Chairman Cho Yang Ho, Heather Cho, was upset about the way they were served. If you ask me, this is just nuts.

Music in this episode is from the United States Air Force Airmen of Note Christmas album A Holiday Note from Home.

APG 145 – Black Friday Edition

APG 145 – Aviation Black Friday – Free Episode

It’s the APG Black Friday Edition! The deal? This episode is free! Well, they all are, actually.

We hear the heartwarming story about a blind man who flies and lands a Cirrus SR20. A new report on several drone near-misses in recent months reveals a serious threat to air safety. It’s rumored that the FAA will require licenses for drone operators when regulations are released. A member of the tech community expresses his opinion about pilotless airliners, and Hawaiian airline Island Air takes back Christmas bonuses awarded to their pilots.

APG 144 – Gross!

APG 144 – Gross!

Well, you see, a “gross” refers to a group of 144 items (a dozen dozen). Episode 144. Get it? Yes, it also refers to things that are unrefined and gravely deficient in civility or decency, so that fits as well!

In the news this week, we discuss the crash of an air cargo flight at Chicago Midway, a MD-88 encounter with geese at RDU, the FAA investigating several drone sitings at JFK, airline fees, and Amazon’s Prime Air.

As usual, lots of interesting questions and feedback from my awesome listeners, including topics of landing gear retraction, the ITCZ, color vision, and more.

APG 143 – Wind Shear, Go-Arounds, Reduced Thrust Takeoffs

APG 143 – Wind Shear, Go-Arounds, Reduced Thrust Takeoffs

A Grand Prairie, Alberta woman is lucky she didn’t lose her head… literally. She was a passenger on a Jazz Dash 8-400 that diverted to Edmonton because of a tire failure. Upon landing, the tire came apart, the right main gear collapsed, and all of the propeller blades separated, including one that found its way into the passenger cabin, narrowly missing Christina Kurylo’s head. This could have been so much worse.

A couple of other crashes are discussed, including a Learjet that crashed in Freeport, killing all nine aboard, and an update on the Virgin Galactic SpaceShip Two crash.

Lots of great feedback again, including discussions about wind shear, go-arounds, reduced thrust takeoffs, and more!
