APG 159 – Terrorist or Nutcase? Unauthorized Jumpseat, Stinky Predicament

APG 159 – Terrorist or Nutcase? Unauthorized Jumpseat, Stinky Predicament

An unruly passenger, purported to be yelling “jihad” while running up the aisle toward the cockpit door, was subdued by passengers on a recent United flight. The pilots turned the jet around and returned to Dulles International, where the nut case was removed from the flight. This time, it seems that “mentally deranged” better describes the man, rather than “terrorist.”

A Cathy Pacific pilot is catching heat after inviting an attractive passenger to sit in the cockpit as he flew the plane. I’m not sure what the regulations are over there, but here in the US, that’d be a “no no.”

Juraj Vaculik, CEO of AeroMobil, in a keynote at South By Southwest in Austin announced their plans for not only a flying car in the future, but a self-flying car! I love dreamers. Really do!

Finally, a British Airways flight had to divert back to Heathrow International for a smelly predicament. It seems that one of the lavatory toilets was overflowing with “liquid faecal excrement.” You know? That really stinks.

APG 158 – Maddog Runway Excursion, Harrison Ford plane crash, UAV Proposal

APG 158 – Maddog Runway Excursion, Harrison Ford plane crash, UAV Proposal

APG Listener, contributor and fellow airline pilot Rick Ruiz joins me for this episode in Miami!

First, we tackle the recent runway excursion incident at LGA. The NTSB is investigating, and so far, all we know is that the airplane didn’t seem to decelerate and the spoilers didn’t automatically deploy. We listen to the ATC recordings (LiveATC.net), and break down what we know.

Imagine you’re out on the golf course, and all of a sudden you hear an airplane flying very close nearby. Then, a WW2 vintage airplane drops from the sky at the next green over. After arriving at the scene, you discover that the pilot of the Ryan Aeronautical ST3KR is none other than Harrison Ford! (Harrison ford plane crash)

On the last episode, we talked about the guy who proposed to his girl while flying inverted… this time, we learn about a guy in San Diego who uses a quadcopter UAV and first-person view goggles to pop the question! Cool.

APG 157 – Inverted Proposal

United sends blunt message to its pilots warning about safety. Boeing CEO explains that B-757 is a very small niche market, and you should not expect them to be making any more. Southwest grounds 128 aircraft due to lapsed inspections.

APG 156 – Ouch. That Stings! UAS?

APG 156 – Ouch. That Stings! UAS?

The FAA released its proposed ‘Flexible’ Rule On Small UAS earlier this week. While satisfying several concerns, large commercial entities such as Amazon.com are not happy.

A third-party vendor for United Airlines made a mistake in calculating the Pound-to-Danish Kroner exchange rate, resulting in trips across the pond being offered for just £52 ($80). Thousands of people took advantage of the mistake by purchasing their trips in kroners.

An Alaska Airlines flight enroute to Portland, OR returned to Los Angeles International after a woman was stung by a scorpion. Ouch. That Stings!

APG 155 – TransAsia Pilots Tested and Retrained, Nose Gear Up Landing

APG 155 – TransAsia Pilots Tested and Retrained, Nose Gear Up Landing

It seems that the pilot crew of the TransAsia ATR that crashed last week in Taiwan misidentified the engine that failed, then subsequently shut down the good engine. Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration ordered proficiency tests and retraining for all TransAsia pilots flying its ATR fleet. Ten pilots failed, and another 19 have been suspended until they take the tests.

An AirAsia A330 flight from Malaysia to Saudi Arabia returned to Kuala Lumpur after the autothrust system failed. Why couldn’t the flight continue?

A US Airways E190 landed nose gear up at Houston Intercontinental. We listen to the LiveATC.net recording.

High-altitude ice crystal icing is a problem whose frequency is alarmingly high. Evidence indicates that engine icing incidents caused by ice accreting inside the core of jet-based engines have been occurring for over two decades.

APG 154 – TransAsia Crash, Asia Aviation Safety, Rocking Chairs, and Ringtones

APG 154 – TransAsia Crash, Asia Aviation Safety, Rocking Chairs, and Ringtones

Asia Aviation Safety – TransAsia Flight 235 crashed shortly after takeoff from Taipei Songshan Airport Wednesday. Fifteen of the 58 aboard were rescued alive, and at the time of this writing 35 have died, 8 still missing. Dramatic footage of the last few seconds of the flight were recorded by dashcam. After recording the show, it was learned that the right engine had lost power, but the left engine throttle was retarded instead, and the left engine condition lever was set to fuel shut-off position resulting in the shutdown of the left hand engine.

Updates to the AirAsia 8501 crash and Malaysia 370 disappearance were discussed, as well as the general state of air safety in Asia.

Remember the Cirrus SR22 ditching last week? Pilot Leu Morton told ABC news he was filming a “selfie video” while descending toward the Pacific waters after deployment of the CAPS. Check it out.
